Arguably one of the greatest entrepreneurs and business moguls of all time, Richard Branson inspires business leaders across the globe with not only his charisma and free spirit, but also with his keen business sense and leadership philosophy.
It’s difficult to narrow his insightful quotes down to five for business leaders to take to heart, but we’ve taken a crack at it. Adopt these philosophies and watch your business and company culture soar this year.
- “Please be polite. Nothing in life should erode the habit of saying thank you to people or praising them.” ~ Richard Branson
It’s easy to let stress reign supreme when the pressures of leadership come crashing in on you as the CEO or owner of a company. Having emotional intelligence and control in front of your team and customers is a skill that should be honed, regardless of what the day has dropped in your lap. Allowing stress to control your actions, words, and body language is counter-productive. and can quickly erode the culture of your company.
- If at first you don’t succeed, there’s no need for the F word (failure). Pick yourself up and try, try again.” ~ Richard Branson
As the leader, you set the tone for the entire company. The best companies are leaders and innovators in their industries. As such, there will be things that don’t go as planned the first time. Be the CEO/Leader who sets the example and motivates the crew to pick themselves, make necessary adjustments, and ultimately prevail.
- “Happiness is the secret ingredient for a successful business. If you have a happy company, it will be invincible.”
Culture eats strategy for breakfast. When your team is happy, they’ll make your customers happy. It’s pretty much as simple as that. Note, happiness doesn’t happen on accident. The best leaders set the stage for it and nurture it within the organization.
- “Your company should act as a springboard for ambitious employees, not a set of shackles.” ~ Richard Branson
This supports the philosophy of training employees to be so good they can easily move on, but treating them so well, they don’t want to. Figure out a way to advance and challenge your best employees. Then reward them for it by paying them well. You will ultimately develop a team of exceptional talent with extreme loyalty. When you have this, your business will not only sustain it financially, it will reward you richly.
- “Don’t think what’s the cheapest way to do, or the fastest way to do it … think what the most amazing way to do it.” ~ Richard Branson
Don’t allow your business to become a commodity. That’s a quick race to the bottom on price. If price is the only thing that distinguishes you from your competition, you’ll be out of business in no time. The companies that stand out, the companies that attract the best talent, the companies that last and dominate their markets, are the companies that find the most amazing way to do it.
It seems too simple. But we’d assert that adopting these five philosophies as the leader in your company and executing them well, is a sure recipe for success, growth, business longevity and an incredible corporate culture.
