There are leaders by title and then there are leaders of influence.
Which are you?
Have you ever given thought to what traits make a business leader a power influencer?
In Jeffrey Gitomer’s “Little Teal Book of Trust” there is entire chapter devoted to the traits of people with influence. He actually outlines 24 elements. Not all people of influence have all 24, but he suggests the more they have, the greater their power of influence.
It was hard to select, but here we’ve chosen 5 from the list of 24 that we feel definitely apply to C-Suite and business owners of influence. Master these qualities and you’re on your way to being a business leader with powerful influence.
- Power Influencers Lead from a Position of Service Rather Than Sales
Leading from a position of service drives long-term trusted relationships. It’s about doing what’s best for the team or the customer, regardless of self-imposed quotas or deadlines. When you lead from a position of sales, you acting in the short term – it’s transactional. Service is relational. Service drives sales. Service drives trust. Service drives referrals. Service drives repeat business. Power influencers always lead from a position of service.
- Power Influencers Get the Job Done – No Matter What
Influencers are performers, not excuse makers. They don’t need excuses because they lead by doing and they do what they say they will do. As Gitomer puts it, “they are reliable and relentless.” Power influencers show up and get the job done. Every. Single. Time.
- Power Influencers are Shrewd
Shrewd goes beyond smart. Smart leaders may have answers, but shrewd leaders have a game plan. Most importantly, their game plan is always formulated around the success of others, not their own. “Shrewd” means having or showing sharp powers of judgment; astute. Powerful influencers demonstrate incredible judgement in how they implement and execute with an “everyone wins” mindset.
- Power Influencers are Thinkers
Most people don’t spend time thinking – they make knee jerk decisions. Sometimes they work out and sometimes they don’t. Power influencers take the time to think things through. They observe, they reason, and then they respond. Notice, we didn’t say they delay … it’s not that they delay decisions. They listen and observe before they speak. They think through the answer before it comes out of their mouth. You’ll notice a power influencer around the table because they will almost always speak last and offer an insight or solution that no one else contributed.
- Power Influencers Have Earned Trust
There are many things that go into building and earning trust, they are all required, and they all take time. That said, it only takes breaking one element to lose trust. Small white lies, broken promises (however inconsequential) all erode trust. Power influencers don’t break trust with their people or their customers. Their daily actions and decisions consistently and unequivocally build on the strong foundation earned and nurtured over years.
