January 12th, 2018
2017 is in the rear-view mirror. Many companies are closing out books and budgets. Of course strategic planning for 2018 started last year, but the time is here. A great step to bridge those activities into the new year is a little Reflection. Take a little time to truly evaluate last year’s activities and the outcomes. Try to ‘walk through’ the year and consider everything that transpired. With or without your leadership team, ask:
- What was our best decision of the year?
- What was our biggest learning?
- What changes should we employ to lead the company successfully in 2018?
Before 2018 is at top speed, clear your mind a little. And encourage your staff to do the same. Perhaps during the holidays there was time to relax and rejuvenate, but there’s always the chance that the holidays just introduced more responsibilities and stress. Maybe have a casual workshop with your team that is part reflection on the items above, and part ‘cleansing breath’ that enables that feeling of a fresh start. Clear the 2017 cobwebs (and stressors) in order to look toward 2018 through a new lens. Reflect, Regenerate, Renew. Now you’re ready to tackle those important strategies and actions to make 2018 your most successful year yet.
An interesting exercise is to correlate (or not), the answers to these questions with any strategic planning you’ve already accomplished. Do they match up? Is your strategic plan going to result in the answer to the third bullet above? It’s a great check and balance to ensure that your reflection on last year’s close-out agrees with your strategic plans for 2018. And the timing is right to tweak anything that doesn’t take you forward in the right way.
At LXCouncil, we’re reaching out to our members to help them reflect on last year as they kick-off 2018. Please contact us here if you would like to hear more details on how we’re effecting this process. Happy New Year!
