A letter to our members from the Founder
Over the last week, we have all read various statements from companies about their position on diversity. While they all differ in many ways, they all have one thing in common. They realize that as a society we are stuck in this loop of one step forward and one step backwards. What we’ve done in the past, no matter how well meaning, has simply not been good enough. If George Floyd’s death accomplished anything, it is that businesses everywhere now realize that something has to change. We can no longer settle for merely trying to do better. In the words of that great philosopher Yoda, “there is no try, only do”. I’ve asked myself, what more can we do at LXCouncil? We have always been committed to having diversity at LXCouncil, but admittedly, this has primarily shown up with a strong male/ female balance. Is this because we have some internal bias that I’ve never realized exists? I don’t think so, but I now realize we may not have been as intentional as we should have been. What I do know is that while we have some success in having members of color, we need to do better. I am asking each of you, and especially our African American/ Black members, to help me to add even more diversity to our groups. I believe we will all benefit from having more diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
I’ve struggled with this message over the last five days because I know that everyone has different experiences and therefore has their own unique reaction to the events of the last two weeks. We’ve become a very polarized society. Even the best intentioned messages carry the risk of offending someone – especially when the topic becomes about race. But that’s also why I believe that my team and I have a responsibility to each of you to explore this situation in our groups. Within each of your own organizations, your people have different reactions. Some are supportive of the protesters and may have even joined them. Some may think the protesters are worse than the problem itself and want them all in jail. Many are probably still processing all of this and really don’t know what to think yet. No matter where each of them stands, they are all going to expect you as the leader of your company to lead them, just as you have through Covid-19. The very purpose of these groups is to help each of you become better leaders. We at LXCouncil would not be doing our jobs if we did not create a forum for this discussion in the meetings to come.
And finally to our members of color, thank you for being our pioneers. I would sincerely appreciate hearing any thoughts and suggestions you might have to make LXCouncil a diversity leader in the peer group industry.
