Ever hear the common leadership phrase, “Leaders are readers?”
Consider this : simply because it’s common, doesn’t make it true.
We subscribe more to Mark Miller’s philosophy (author of “The Secret – What Great Leaders Know and Do”, as well as, “The Heart of Leadership”) . He purports that the best leaders are learners.
Learning can take many forms, but regardless of the form, all great leaders have the innate desire for constant learning and improvement. In fact, lesson number four in “The Heart of Leadership” is the Hunger for Wisdom.
Miller explains that as a leader, a hunger for wisdom fueled by a commitment to lifelong learning will equip you for whatever lies ahead. As the leader in your business or organization, it’s important to be open to input, new ideas, contrarian opinions, and views. And, it’s essential to establish a network of counselors to call on for their advice and wisdom.

It’s no mistake that Miller chose the words, Wisdom and Counsel, and it’s important to understand the intention with which this language is selected.
Miller chooses “wisdom” over “knowledge” because wisdom is the application of knowledge. Many people have knowledge, and knowledge is easily gained … however, the best business leaders have wisdom. Wisdom is the soundness of an action or decision with regard to the application of experience, knowledge, and good judgment.
Miller also chooses “counsel” over “feedback” with great intention. Feedback is input on past events. Counsel is guidance and advice for future action. While feedback is important for leaders, experienced counsel is critical. It’s excellent counsel from the wisdom and experience of others that helps guide the best leaders to success in their business.
The take-aways:
- As the leader in your business, wisdom trumps knowledge.
- While soliciting ongoing feedback is a worthy exercise for improvement, the best leaders seek counsel from the experience of other business leaders and CEOs to accelerate growth.
