Blogging has been at the forefront of content marketing for several year now, and when done right can be a POWERFUL tool for your business. As the CEO or business owner, your blog has the potential to be even more powerful and influential simply due to the audiences you reach that a regular team member simply doesn’t.
As the business owner or CEO, you have several audiences:
- upper management
- your team
- your community
- your customers
- potential company buyers
… as well as several others!
Put It On Your Schedule and Stay Consistent
Writing a blog routinely is an excellent way to regularly communicate your vision, your company “why”, future initiatives, what keeps you up at night, challenges you see for the company, and so much more. It’s an expanded content piece that will be read. Use it to really dive into what you want your audience to know.
The most important part about deciding to blog is to schedule time for it. Put it on your calendar and stick to it. If you follow some of the top influencers in business, you will see that they are blogging. Some blog every day. Consistency is key to influence, trust, and growth in your fan base.
So, how do you get started blogging?
Define who you are talking (writing) to. Your audience can vary, but for an individual blog, it can really help if you define who you want to reach and write for them.
Pick your topic. This is often the hard part. It’s a good idea to brainstorm several topics in one sitting. If you have several topics at the ready, you’re more likely to sit down and write a blog each week. You can write about things like: What your succession team would want to know; What the biggest challenge you see for the company is in the next 12 months; Raves about a team lead or your corporate culture. The possibilities are really endless. Whatever your topic, keep it focused and something that can be talked about in 800-1200 words.
To help you get started, here are 8 topic ideas that could be interesting for a CEO or business owner to blog about:
- What we look for in a leader in our company…
- The biggest problem we solve for our clients is …
- When it’s okay to fire a customer …
- The biggest lesson I’ve learned as CEO in the last 12 months is …
- My reading list from the last 12 months included …
- The biggest challenge our industry faces in the next 12 months is …
- How we drive the culture in our company…
- How we manage and refine the feedback loop with clients …
A few bonus tips to help with your blogging:
- Add photos/graphics to your blog to help tell your story and illustrate key points.
- Use lists or bullets. This makes scanning your blog really easy, especially for mobile readers.
- Write in active tense whenever possible.
- Use humor and have fun. Some of the best blogs we have read are funny and self deprecating.
